REPRESENTATIVE PROGRAM

HANDBOOK

Auckland Badminton Association (ABA) is committed to achieving sustained success through representative programs being the top performing Association at team competitions including the Wisden Cup, Slazenger Cup and Junior Team Championships (NZJTC) and developing players to achieve Badminton New Zealand representation.

Our representative program aims to provide the optimal environment for players to achieve their potential, whether that is international success, national representation, or their personal best achievements

Wisden and Slazenger Cups are the team priority for the ABA senior program each year.  Many Under 19 and Under 17 players are given the opportunity to compete for positions in the Senior Wisden and Slazenger Cup teams as we feel this is an important transition from juniors to seniors and gives these players additional experience.

The New Zealand Junior Team Championships is the team priority for the ABA junior program each year.  To be eligible to play for ABA at the NZJTC you must be between the ages of 10 and 18.

For many players they will start in our NZ leading development programs, where players receive a free racket, quality coaching and learn to play badminton for fun.  We hope that through our programs, no matter what higher honours players achieve, they always maintain a love for Badminton and play for fun.

Auckland Badminton and Badminton New Zealand strongly support the Sport New Zealand ‘Balance is Better’ strategy.

KEY DATES

  • Our 2024/2025 representative year starts on 1 October 2024 and finishes on 30 September 2025.
  • For our Junior Program, the biggest event we build towards in the New Zealand Junior Team Championships which will be held in Palmerston North from June 29th to July 2nd, 2025.
  • Most squad selection occurs during Term 3 2024 on Saturdays during the Yonex Youth Super League (YYSL).  Players who are not in ABA squads are encouraged to sign up for YYSL to trial and allow our coaches to evaluate them for our 2024/2025 squads.
  • Wisden and Slazenger Cups do not have a set date; however, we anticipate this tournament to be held between April and August 2025, most likely at a venue within Auckland given it was in Waikato in 2024.  This date will be confirmed when BNZ publishes their 2025 calendar.
