From Pork to Price Hikes: How China’s Shuttlecock Shortage Impacts Badminton

Rising shuttlecock prices in China, largely fuelled by reduced duck and goose farming due to higher pork demand, are impacting badminton players globally. These price hikes are creating challenges for the Auckland Badminton Association (ABA), which is working hard to maintain affordability in the sport despite the cost pressures.

"With the steep increase in shuttlecock prices, it's becoming difficult to keep badminton accessible for everyone,” Tony Naidu, Acting GM commented. “We aim to provide a mix of shuttle options, including hybrid shuttles in some programs, to meet various needs without compromising quality."

ABA remains committed to supporting the badminton community through these rising costs by diversifying the shuttles they offer and exploring solutions that balance affordability and performance. Players are encouraged to stay informed about upcoming changes as the ABA adapts to keep the sport accessible in Auckland and ensure high-quality experiences on the court.
