As a leading organisation in Auckland’s badminton community, Auckland Badminton Association (ABA) is deeply committed to fostering an environment of respect, inclusivity, and good sports. These values are central to our mission, and we believe they create a positive and supportive atmosphere for all players, parents, and supporters.

ABA proudly aligns with Good Sports, and Balance is Better frameworks, which emphasise holistic athlete development, positive sideline behaviour, and the importance of enjoying the journey in sports. These initiatives guide our inclusive approach and ensure we prioritise the well-being of every individual participating in our programs.

Recently, ABA received a complaint regarding inappropriate behaviour directed at a young player. This behaviour is unacceptable and contrary to the culture we work hard to uphold. Bullying or hurtful comments—whether among players, parents, or coaches—have no place in our organisation. Players should feel valued, supported, and respected as they grow in their badminton journey.

We take these matters seriously and remind all community members about the behaviour standards expected under ABA’s Code of Conduct, which applies to players, parents, and coaches.

To further reinforce our commitment to respectful behaviour, ABA will:

1. Promote Awareness: Continue to share educational materials from Good Sports, and Balance is Better with all members, emphasising the importance of positive sideline and team behaviours.
2. Empower Coaches: Provide additional training for coaches to identify and address instances of bullying, ensuring they foster a culture of respect and support within their squads.
3. Encourage Open Communication: Ensure everyone is aware of the safe channels for players and parents to raise concerns, ensuring all voices are heard and issues are addressed promptly.
4. Reaffirm Our Values: Conduct player discussions this week emphasising the importance of being a good sport, teamwork, and resilience in winning and losing.

We ask that all community members join us in reinforcing these values, leading by example to create a welcoming and encouraging environment for all. Together, we can ensure that badminton continues to be a sport where players thrive, friendships flourish, and positive memories are made.

ABA stands united against bullying in all forms, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to safeguarding the well-being of every child and individual in our programs.
